Psychological Structural Analysis.
Diagnostic clarification of what carries, blocks, or could tip a given constellation — as an independent advisory discipline under the mandate of one commissioning party.
What Structural Analysis Asks
Structural analysis does not ask: What is being openly contested? It asks: What holds the situation in its current form? Which needs, loyalties, and claims to recognition — never formulated in the visible — shape the behaviour of those involved?
This diagnosis makes visible where an intervention must orient itself, so it does not remain on the surface. It does not provide a therapy indication, but a structural reading of the situation.
When Structural Analysis Fits
- Before a mediation, to check whether the procedure is feasible at all
- In an escalation where the manifest dispute is clearly not the actual driver
- In organisations where, despite repeated attempts at clarification, the same pattern keeps returning
- In transition phases — generational change, succession of management, change of ownership — where unaddressed structures burden the future
Approach
Structural analysis begins with a careful assessment of the situation. Conversations with key persons — sometimes with the whole group of those involved, sometimes only with the commissioning party.
I listen not only to what is said but also to what is not said, what is repeated, what is avoided. From this emerges a diagnosis: a structural reading, with a concrete recommendation as to where interventions can begin — and where not.
Distinction from Mediation
Structural analysis is not mediation. In structural analysis I work under the mandate of one party or one organisation and take a position. Mediation, by contrast, is impartial — procedural leadership for all parties at once, without mandate from any side.
If a structural analysis indicates that a mediation would make sense, I refer the case to another mediator. Holding both roles in the same constellation would be methodologically unsound.
